Rail Sizing
When flush mounting solar modules, the lengths of XRS or XRL rail
required for each row can be calculated by multiplying the quantity
of modules in a row by the module's width. To this add a 6 mm
space between each module, and 38 mm to each end for the total
rail length needed for that row.
For example, to mount twelve modules that are each 1 m wide, the
calculations are as follows:
12 x 1 m = 12000 mm (account for width of modules in portrait mode)
11 x 6 mm = 66 mm (account for width of mid-clamps between the
twelve modules)
2 x 38 mm = 76 mm (to account for two end clamps)
12000 + 66 + 76 = 12142 mm (total length of each rail)
Thus ten 2743 mm (9 ft ) rails will be required to mount these
twelve modules in a row.*

Tracker or fixed mount?
The path of the sun changes with the seasons. Thus the angle of
incidence of the sun striking the solar panels changes. A single axis
tracker tracks the sun east to west and a dual axis tracker tracks the
daily east to west movement of the sun and the seasonal
declination movement of the sun. A single axis tracker pivots only
about a vertical axle, with the solar panels mounted at a fixed tilt
or (seasonally) adjustable angles, and is suitable for high latitudes
where the apparent solar path is not high, but which leads to long
days in summer (sun traveling a long arc). Compared to a fixed
solar mount, a single axis tracker can improve the annual energy
production up to 30 %, and a dual axis tracker an additional 6%.
Factors that can negate the advantage of trackers are the cost, the
technology (motors or compressed gas fluid) and the maintenance.
In terms of cost of a complete solar system, it could be cost
effective to gain the same annual energy harvest by adding
one or more modules on a fixed mount without worrying
about mechanical failure using a solar tracker.

| Single Axis Tracker It is a well known fact that photovoltaic module output is highest when the sun strikes the module at 90 degrees. Early in the morning and late afternoon much of the light hits on an angle thus reducing power output. This Tracker uses an innovative PV circuit to control the electric actuator arm which positions the PV array to point at the sun. Photovoltaics are more sensitive and reliable, and react faster than refrigerant based units. |
